iPhone...iDo! ... Yellowstone 1

I have lived in Montana for twenty years and have always wanted to visit Yellowstone by snowcoach. So this year to celebrate the next chapter of a very dear friend's adventure in life, we loaded up the family and joined him on a snowcoach tour of Yellowstone! It was everything I always imagined it would be. But for me there always those hidden gems that make things even more special!

There were plenty of gems on this trip (watch for future blog posts), but the standout for me had to be Ranger Rita Garcia at Old Faithful. Whether she was herding guests away from the bison, or answering questions and offering information, Ranger Rita did so with an incredibley upbeat and cheerful demeanor. But it was her seemingly overflowing enthusiasm for her job and obvious love for Yellowstone made my stop at Old Faithful the real highlight of the trip for me. Old Faithful, wrapped in steam, was gorgeous, but it was Ranger Rita that really inspired me. How fabulous to have to the opportunity to meet such a wonderful woman who takes so much joy in her surroundings and her job, and shares it so willingly and with such a positive attitude. So 2 Thumbs up for Ranger Rita...thanks for making my dream trip to Yellowstone such a wonderful experience and for leaving me inspired to approach each day with such joy and enthusiasm!

Siri....how do I capture inspiration?

I love my iPhone and one of the things I love the most is the ability to snap great pictures of inspring things, moments, and people. I can catalog them, email them, send to facebook or pinterest and share them with you through this blog. So welcome to iPhone....iDo!

For my first post....my tunbleweed! If you live in Montana, you've probably seen the tumbling tumbleweed rolling across open spaces. Well I chased a few down and brought them home with me. Though I had an objective when I collected them, they ended up hanging in my studio waiting for a free minute when they could be transformed. But in a way by not being transformed, they have transformed from the original objective. In thier tumbleweed form, they are a constant reminder of the potential that inspiration holds. By not changing them, they represent the open-ended, the many paths that can be taken to different ends. In that, they serve as a source of contant inpiration. I am able to rethink them on daily basis. So maybe they will become something else and maybe they will just stay tumbleweeds, but either way, they are really so much more!

My daughter has been riding since she was 4, so we have always gone out to her barn on Sundays to help with chores. As much as we might not want to crawl out of bed when its zero or below (not a problem this year!), we pile outselves into layer upon layer of clothing and head out. Horses expect their hay no matter what the weather. But once we're out there and moving horses, mucking stalls, and loading hay, its actually a great place to be. Though I only occasionally get on a horse, I like being around them. They have a peaceful quality to them (at least most of the time). But mostly, I love being in a different space. Its hands on work...no phones, no computers...and it gives me time to think, to be inspired. On top of being around these magnificiant animals, I am always taken by the beauty that is my own backyard. The morning sun rising over the Bridger Mountains looming large just behind me, the snow-covered Spanish Peaks to the South, the Tobacco Roots to the West, all remind me of just what an incredible place this is. Its easy to take your 'place' for granted as life whizzes by, but when you are standing out in it, the cold of a Montana morning biting at you, the horse you are leading covered in frost, its hard to not to realize how blessed we are in Montana. One of the reasons I originally started planning weddings was my love for the beauty Montana offered and my belief it could be a top wedding destination. So no matter how cold, I head out on Sunday to feed the horses and to be reminded of just how lucky I am.

Inspiration on the Road

One of my favorite aspects of my job is getting to travel around Montana to scout locations, meet with couples and their familes, and visit venues and vendors. Along the way I get to explore some very cool places and meet a lot of wonderful people. One of my all time favorite places is Philipsburg. I spent my last anniversary at the The Broadway Hotel, located smack dab in the middle of town and loved everything about it from the room to the proprietor. And if you have a sweet-tooth, here's a secret...heaven is in Philipsburg! The Sweet Palace is one of my families favorite places. There are buckets upon buckets of every kind of candy you can imagine. That favorite candy from childhood...odds are they have it! And the handmade fudge....well lets just say we never have any left when we get back home.

I always find something inspiring in this little town, and on my most recent trip, we stopped in at Doe Brothers restaurant before heading over to the venue. Our waitress, Mandy, was wonderful! Another reason I love Montana, the people i get to meet on my travels around the state. A real old fashioned soda fountain and restaurant, it is the kind of place many towns and cities have unfortunately lost, a place for locals and visitors to gather and spend a little time chatting over coffee or lunch. I loved the color palette as well as the form so I snapped a few pics on the iphone and straight to pinterest! Not sure where I will use it yet, but rest assured its on the inspiration board and when the occasion arises, it will be there.

But ultimately, my inspiration is about so much more than color and form. The real inspiration I get from towns like Philipsburg is deeper than that. Its hard to say exactly, but they encompass the spirit of Montana, the can do perseverance, the celebration of the past with an eye to future, and the welcoming nature of the state. Its about people that love a place and put their all into that place, letting it shine for others. That is the true inspiration I take from Philipsburg.

Inspiration Found!

We are lucky to live in a place where there are plenty of areas to go cut down our Christmas Tree. A $5 permit, a saw, and some good winter boots were all we needed this year to head out on our expedition. Little did I know that my daughter is the pickiest person in the world when it comes to Christmas trees. Actually I knew it, but was hoping it was just a passing phase. The long and short of it was we got to spend A LOT of time in the woods looking for a tree! While she was busy exploring deep into the woods for the pefect tree, I had plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and to look for inspiration. As soon as I saw this moss covered piece of wood, I knew I wanted to use it in a design. So I picked it up and handed it to my son so he could carry it....lol! By the end of our day, we had a suitable tree (ahhh the ongoing search for the bliss of perfection), and the entire family was carrying bits of inspiration, some larger than others! It all ended up in our shop to keep our hanging tumbleweeds (watch for that in a future post) company. So keep your eyes open, you never know what you will stumble across.

Inspiration....South goes West

In September I was down South for my Mother-in-Law's 70th birthday and it was wonderful to spend some time in a different environment. We stayed on a lake out of town so I was able to take daily walks among tremendous old oaks dripping with Spanish Moss. The magnolia's were not blooming, but were still fabulous with their seedpods bursting and full of the bright red seeds. I did find a miniature magnolia with a couple of magnificent blooms. But what really inspired me was the cotton. On a drive up to North Mississippi for my nephew's football game, we drove through acres and acres of it and I immediately knew I wanted to work with it. When I got back home, I hit my rolodex looking for a source and low and behold, a few weeks later I was working with cotton. I love the contrast between the stalks and the cotton bolls, as well as the textural element the actual cotton offers. It was a unique product to feature in Montana, but the arrangements were beautiful and the response was great. It was fun to sit watch as people walked by, they couldn't help but reach out and touch the bolls. One of the things I find the most fun in design is taking items out of their environment and using them in new context. So if you are designing for your wedding, event or home, take a moment to envision items beyond their everyday use.

Inspiration Out of the Ordinary

I've been designing and planning weddings for close to a decade now and have worked on events that cover the gamut of design asthetics. I am often asked where we get our inspiration and how we develop our visions. Well, the simple answer is I try to see inspiration in everthing. Whether I am walking into a location or perusing our favorite antique shop, I try to look a little beyond what is in front of me and see the potential the item holds above the ordinary. This old bicycle wheel was in the basement of one of my favorite anitique shops. As soon as I saw it, I saw it as a way to display photographs. I love the graphic quailty it offers and the simplicity of design it brings. We aren't looking to reinvent the wheel, we just want to repurpose it.

My My .... How a Day Can Change!

My My, how a day can change. One minute I was steaming a dress and the next I was planning a wedding reception.......for that evening! This couple was eloping and had the ceremony planned, but wanted more than just the ceremony. Our thought......just because it was short notice did not mean it should be anything less than fantastic! So we kicked it into high gear, placed a few phone calls, pulled a few strings, assembled a top-notch team, and Voila....a beautiful, personal wedding reception for 2! The Bride had her dress, but we had her come to the studio early so the style team we assembled could help her get ready. We called Plonk (one of our favorite places....great food, great wine, incredible staff and owners) to arrange for a table for 2 and how wonderful it was when the couple walked in and the place erupted in cheers and applause. The Kelly Roberti Trio provided the music for the first dance and a petite wedding cake from Elle's Belles was just perfect for this little event. We believe every wedding, whether planned over a year or planned in a few hours, should be incrdible, and we loved playing a part in making this couple's day something special and beautiful.

Springhill Pavilion in the Winter

Springhill Pavilion is such an incredible venue. Steeped in history and dripping with character, the Pavilion is nestled in at the end of the road with Ross Peak rising up behind it and incredible Gallatin Valley views stretched out in front. We have planned and attended some truly magnificent weddings at Springhill. I was lucky enough to go on a site visit a few days ago and as spectacular as the scenery is during the season, it is magical during the winter. I love the Pavilion and all it has to offer.amazing views, its rich history, its magical setting, but for me, what makes it really special are the owners, Chum and Sally. Not only are they just great people, but the pride they have in the Pavilion is wonderful. The Pavilion has provided the community and much of the valley a location for its special events for the last 130 plus years, and is still going strong. We would like to thank Chum and Sally for continuing the tradition and letting the Pavilion play such an important role in so many people's lives.

We did a wedding for a wonderful couple this past July 4th. The Groom, an Army Ranger, is a Purple Heart Recipient for injuries he received in combat. The sacrifices he, along with many of his guests have made, were a reminder of the costs of the freedom we enjoy. Today, we recieved the following email from the bride and thought it was important to pass it along so Project Healing Waters, a wonderful non-profit that works with wounded vets, can get the recognition it deserves. I've seen rain and I've seen fire.....

Let me start this post by saying we are revisiting some of our past weddings. We should have the pictures from this past season's events very soon and cannot wait to share them with you!

The last blog was about an unexpected snowstorm, so we are going to swing in the opposite direction and feature this one since it was smack dab in the middle of a major fire season. The couple are very dear friends from NY, and we wanted this wedding to be something special for them and their guests. So we decided to embrace the fire theme! The bride loves pinks and reds and oranges so it was perfect. We featured custom orange linens, brilliant flame inspired centerpieces, and "Marshmellow on a stick" place-cards. The only thing we did not have was real fire or any sort. Since it was so dry, we used led "flame" cubes instead of candles and created a realistic glowing-ember fire in the firepit using the same cubes. It was great wedding and we were honored to be a part of it. The thing to take away from these last two posts is Montana is a beautiful and wild place and conditions can change. The key is to have a plan in place and to embrace the day you get and make it the day you've always wanted.

When Life Hands You Lemons ....or in this case Snow!

It's late October, so this post seems very appropriate. This Big Sky wedding was originally set to be an outdoor ceremony followed by a spectacular indoor reception. Well Mother Nature had a different agenda! The snow started that morning and pretty much just never stopped. We have done enough weddings in MT to know a 'cover plan' is essential anytime of the year, especially late fall in the high country. As much as the bride had hoped for an outdoor wedding ceremony, being a Montana native, and former competitive downhill skier, she is no stranger to snow and took the weather in stride. Instead of letting the change set the tone for the day, the couple along with photographer, Cindy Cieluch, took full advantage of the snow and captured these incredible and memorable images what was a wonderful and beautiful day. Though we had to make some changes, looking back on these pictures and the memories, maybe the snow was really a good thing!

The location was unique in that it offered a large field high above the Yellowstone with expansive view of the river and Paradise Valley, and a century old barn built right on the banks of the river. This allowed for an incredible two-course wedding; the vows and tented dinner set against the awe-inspiring scenery of Paradise Valley and reception, a true old style barn dance. To bring a feeling of authenticity, the barn was lit with wonderful old school lights. 10 Foot tall and 80 Proof was the perfect band to compliment the feeling the couple was looking to achieve. Old timers and locals joined the guests and shared tales of the barn’s storied past as a center of social activity for that part of the Valley. This wedding was an incredible event, a wonderful celebration of the couple’s love and a very personal chapter in the history of the old barn that gracest their property.

The wonderful thing about Montana is the rustic elegance that comes from simple, everyday things, such as old grain bins or your grandmother's stove.

When you see your first bluebird, you know it is spring in Montana. And that is what this trip to a bride's family farm was all about: spring and blue. Blue skies, blue mason jars, and Bluebird, the old grain truck which is going to be a great prop for the reception in an upcoming wedding.

This wedding was a perfect expression of the bride’s Southern upbringing and the groom’s Native American heritage. The ceremony was co-officiated by the bride’s family minister from Georgia and the groom’s Grandfather, an elder of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribe. The couple were stunning, the bride in a Monique Lluillier gown and the groom in a khaki suit beautifully complimented by his traditional beaded bolo tie. Following the traditional wedding ceremony, the families celebrated with a pipe ceremony, traditional drumming and a round dance. This wedding was the storybook beginning for a wonderful couple that started when a Southern girl that met a Montana boy.

It's only November, which means that the snow has only begun to fall. It's lovely and festive now, but the summer will be here before we know it!

July and August means it's cherry season, and we love these rainier cherries as an accent to this pretty cake.

P.S. I have to tell you from first hand experience, this butter-cream frosting smelled divine and tasted even better!
